Fly Fishing

Fly Fishing Rods

Using the appropriate rod and line is vital to casting performance. Durability of a rod is indicated by Nwt, where “N” is a number between one and sixteen, one being the weakest, and sixteen being the sturdiest for saltwater fishing. The number indicates how much weight a given rod can tolerate. The number of the line must match the number of the rod. It is not recommended to pair a rod with a line anymore than just one number more or less. Throughout history and in today, rods are made out of bamboo where they are prevalent in the Far East. Bamboo rods offer surprising strength. They are ideal for slower casting styles and leisurely fishing. The process of making a bamboo rod can be rather lengthy and arduous, thus bamboo rods are pricy.

Other Equipment

Fly reels on fishing rods are rather simple in mechanical design. The line is wound up on the spool manually to retrieve the catch. Bigger rods for bigger fish usually have stronger stainless steel components to their reels. Fly fishing was named after the bait used, flies. But throughout the years the artificial bait has evolved to all different sorts of bait, such as shrimp and leeches. A nice escape from the everyday routine can be a nice fly fishing vacation where one can enjoy the silence, the sounds, and the solitude of nature. Popular Fly fishing destinations include Alaska, Colorado, and Michigan. Probably one of the most popular fly fishing destinations in the world is Katmai National Park in Alaska. There runs the Moraine River with some of the world’s largest salmon and trout. Since Michigan is the heart of the great Lakes area, watershed and rivers are very common throughout the state. It is not uncommon for residents to spend a weekend fly fishing and camping and returning to work the following week. Popular fly fishing rivers in Colorado are the 38 mile Colorado Blue River and the Roaring fork river near Aspen.

Entire towns have come to base their economies off the tourism fishing brings. There is no better way to enjoy the hobby and learn more about it than to do it with other experienced fishermen.
