Many organizations conscious of these growing issues have set forth initiatives to work for healthier watersheds and to protect and restore trout populations. It is important to ensure that future generations will have the ability to go trout fishing. Recently, an effort was began by an organization to protect the Rapid River brook trout in Maine from invasive smallmouth bass. It was a joint effort by states, federal agencies, and conservation groups. Federal and local officials met with the leaders of this organization and developed a comprehensive brook trout management plan that involved in-the-water and out-of-the-water strategies.

There are several different types of trout stocked in Lake Michigan and in the rivers and streams connected to the lake. In the past few years, there has been an stark increase in the reproduction rate of these local trout. Trout fishing in Lake Michigan can be done throughout the year, within certain species more available during certain months.

Trout Fish

There are four distinct species in the popular trout fishing lakes of Michigan; brook, brown, lake, and steelhead--also known as Rainbow trout. Brook trout, for the most part, spawn in September. The most successful times to go brook trout fishing in Michigan are in the fall, from August thru December. Fishing for brook trout from the shore of a lake or river is done year round, while brook trout fishing by boat is rarely done. Brown Trout, generally spawn from late autumn to December in the Great Lakes. Brown trout fishing generally is best starting in August and finishing in December. From shore, it is done all year, but by boat, just May thru October. Lake trout fishing is a little more exclusive, since they prefer deeper offshore waters. Fishing for lake trout from shore is seldom and is not very successful. Steelhead, or rainbow trout, usually spawn from the months of February thru May in the Great Lakes state. Steelhead fishing most often takes place in the autumn from late August thru the following May. From shore, it is done with success all year round, but in a boat, it generally takes place from May thru October.
